MEALRIGG HALL STUD

Breeding the finest quality Friesians and crossbreds in the UK.

Mealrigg Hall Stud was set up eight years ago by sisters Alex and Winnie, in 22 acres of beautiful Cumbrian countryside, with the Lake District only an hour away and the sandy beaches of the Solway Firth only 4 miles away, it really was the idilic backdrop for a stud farm.

We are privileged to own the most magnificent friesian stallion Wessel, who has an outstanding pedigree, temperament and  conformation and throws the most stunning foals, we are so pleased, his photo's don't do him justice!  Our aim is to breed top quality friesians and friesian partbreds, we like the true baroque and classic style friesians, not the long skinny friesians that the friesian horse society prefers!  We aim to have horses that have compact correct conformation with plenty of bone, kind willing temperaments and outstanding natural action, so they can lead long useful lives - and look really good at the same time!!  We have 2 up and coming stallions at the moment - one a pure friesian colt - Othello, now available for stud for 2008, and the other a friesian cross Thoroughbred, we just couldn't resist keeping him!        Both are by Wessel, so watch the stallions page!

                                               OUR HORSES

We very much believe in keeping our horses in as natural state as possible, especially our stallions- we do not believe in keeping them on their own or permanently in a stable. Our horses are run in herds from Spring to Winter, stallions included as this ensures that foals grow not just physically but mentally in a natural hierarchical society, helping them with their later training. This also benefits mares and stallions as they can interact and form normal relationships.  We also have a wide variety of other animals which the foals get used to so they don't panic in later life when confronted by a deer or a cow etc!!!

We feed our horses the best  so we know that all the horses and unborn horses get the nutrition they need.
